How to Choose the Right Collar Style for Your Jacket

With numerous collar styles to choose from, it can be a bit daunting to choose the perfect shirt collar jacket style for you. Here are three guidelines to follow when in doubt.

When in doubt, go for shirt collar jackets

If you don’t want something specific and just want to wear something normal, shirt collar jackets are the way to go. This collar is not especially small or large and has good, wearable proportions. It goes nicely with both casual and formal wear. You can wear it with a tie or with a casual shirt. Shirt collar jackets are by far the most popular collar style available and you just can’t go wrong with it.

People with shorter necks choose collars with shorter collar bands

If you have an especially short neck, you are better off with average or shorter collar bands. Collar band is the part of the collar that goes around your neck, so its height determines how high the collar goes up your neck. Great options in this category include Semi Spread, English Spread, Straight Point and Londoner collars. You shouldn't go any smaller than the Richard Cutaway collar, which has a ¾-inch collar band.'

People with longer necks choose collars with longer collar bands

If you are very tall or feel that you have a longer neck, you should opt for a collar with a slightly longer collar band like the President Spread collar. The President collar is just slightly longer than the average collar, so it won’t look too massive, no matter your height. If you would prefer getting something really tall, consider the Milano collar style.
